Origins: From Lelo to Rugby

Georgian rugby is a natural continuation of Lelo-burti (Lelo-ball) - an ancient form of folk football, still alive in country-side

Lelo has its roots in pagan times: the ball symbolized the Sun, one of the cesestial bodies worshipped throughout the Middle East

The game used to be a proven form of military exercise

It was adopted by the Orthodox Church to such an extent that the Priest used to bless a red - the most revered Christian colour - ball at Easter and throw it up to the players

Village vied with village, Uppies with Downies, married men with betrotheds and bachelors, and sometimes teams were selected on tribal lines

The goal of the Lelo-burti was to bring the ball to a pre-marked place, that is Lelo. Hence, both an 'in-goal area' and a 'try' in contemprorary Georgian are referred to as 'Lelo'

Timeline

From the times immemorial, priests used to bless a red ball at Easter and throw it to the parish in order to play Lelo

1894

According to Iveria daily paper, staff of a British cargo ship joined Lelo players in Batumi port and impressed local with rugby skills

1919

According to professor Davrichachvili, who later fled Bolsheviks to France, during brief spell of Independence, there were three teams in the Democratic Republic. They played on the site of present Vake Gardens (Tbilissi)

1926
-

1930

According to then kid, soccer-star-in-making Boris Paitchadze, rugby was played by dockers of Poti, a Black Sea port

1935
-
1940

According to Fizkultureli weekly, students of Sports Technicum arranged first-ever demo game of rugby in Caucasus on 24 May 1935, at former Shevardeni stadium, near Tbilissi Railway station. In 1937 student Guiga Dvali attended a workshop in Moscow and after his return, three years later, managed to establish four teams which took part in Tbilissi Premiership

1947

Vlad Tsyganov of Burevestnik Moscow hastely essembled a team at  Sports Technicum. Georgian novices lost all three games during an inter-city tournament held at Dynamo stadium, and never played again
