Black Sea Cup – New Horizons

10-Sep-2010

On August 24-September 5 2010 Georgia hosted first edition of international club tournament Black Sea Cup. This year, the tournament was played by Georgian, Ukrainian and Romanian teams; for the future, Georgian Rugby Union hopes to make Black Sea Cup a traditional cross-border tournament, involving club teams from more countries. In case of success, importance of the Black Sea Cup might increase to allow Challenge Cup qualification.
On September 8, technical director of Georgian Rugby Union George Tchumburidze, coach of Black Sea Cup winning team Batumi XV Levan Mgeladze and tournament director Lasha Khurtsidze shared with media representative their opinion about the Black Sea Cup and further plans, connected to this tournament.

According to George Tchumburidze, Black Sea Cup showed that the level of Georgian domestic rugby is not inferior to that of its neighboring countries. In the beginning of the tournament no one doubted that the final would be played by Romanian teams, while the events developed in a totally different way. Black Sea Cup is the first cross-border tournament, organized in the Black Sea area. In the future, this tournament might provide club teams from different countries of the region with regular opportunities to enrich their playing experience.

“Unfortunately, this year Russian teams failed to come to Georgia due to various problems, but we will necessarily invite them to the next edition of the Black Sea Cup” - said tournament director Lasha Khurtsidze.

According to Levan Mgeladze, the tournament, if arranged on a regular basis, will facilitate movement of players between the participant countries.

In the future years, Georgian Rugby Union will attempt to expand geographic coverage of the tournament by involving more countries, which will contribute to improving the level of domestic rugby in the whole Black Sea Cup region.
