One Year to Go

On September 9 2010 New Zealand celebrated the one year milestone before Rugby World Cup 2011 kick-off. Gigantic “ONE YEAR TO GO” inscriptions appeared in all regions of the country, written each in a totally different way: with letters of fire in Wellington, with smoke in the sky over Taranaki, by skiers standing in the snow on Mount Hutt… Christchurch, though damaged by the recent earthquake, also marked this day by decorating a neat green river cape with words “1 YR 2 GO” … The whole country joined in celebration.

One year milestone also launches the worldwide tour of Webb Ellis Cup. IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset stated: "It is my pleasure to hand our long-term partner Heineken the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup to take it on the first ever worldwide tour for the next 12 months. I am sure Heineken will create excitement amongst rugby fans on all continents, enabling them to get up close and personal to the Cup.” New Zealand hosted the first RWC in 1987 and it is will welcome the world once more for RWC 2011. Rugby World Cup trophy, named after an English clergyman William Webb Ellis, was first contested in 1987 in New Zealand; since then, RWC turned into one of the most important sport events of the world. In 1987 Webb Ellis Cup was awarded to All Blacks; Australia and South Africa became the World Cup winners twice – Australia in 1991 and 1999, and South Africa in 1995 and 2007; England won the trophy once, in 2003.
Georgia has qualified for the Rugby World Cup three times already. In 2011 the Lelos will compete in Pool B along with England, Scotland, Argentina and play-off winner (to be identified in the end of November 2010, after Uruguay vs Romania match).
