Georgian team travels to France to attend a training camp there

29-Aug-2011

Georgian national team took off for a training camp in France, early on July 18. The French phase of preparation before the world cup will last 47 days. According to the schedule, a week of intense physical exercises is followed by a general training course, concluding with two test matches.

The ‘Lelos’ stay in Mandelieu-la-Napoule - only 10kms away from French Riviera – where, they will spend 32 days in total. This is a rather quiet place, which has a well-developed rugby infrastructure, complete with training halls and a natural grass pitch. As a matter of fact, Georgia’s fullback Besik Khamashuridze – now listed in “AIA” Kutaisi, used to play for local “Cannes Mandelieu” at one time.

On August 6, the team will travel to a small town of Issoire, near Clermont, to compete in an international ‘Issoire Challenge Cup’.

The tournament is held in parallel with the festivities in town – outdoor theatrical performances, and open cafes filled with Rugby fans only contribute to the jovial mood. This year, ‘Issoire Challenge’ will be held for the seventh time.

The ‘Lelos’ will have one friendly against “Aurillac” (three Georgians: a II rower Levan Datunashvili – nicknamed the ‘Hammer’; as well as I rowers Karlen Asieshvili, and Giorgi Natsarashvili currently play there) on August 13, before clashing with “Bourgoin” on August 19.
The hosts await Georgian team’s visit with huge anticipation: banners advertising the upcoming match are already placed on the official web-site, and an emphasis is on the fact that Georgia had selected France as the best place to prepare for the World Cup.

Out of French Top-14 teams, only “Clermont” takes part in the competition, whereas “Montpellier” first gave its consent, but later refused to attend. So, “Clermont” will now play against “Scarlets” from UK.

As for the ‘Lellos’, they plan to return to Mandelieu after the ‘Issoire Challenge’ ends. At that time, the head coach Richie Dixon will name a final 30-men squad to travel to New Zealand on September 4.

The coaching staff of Richie Dixon, Gareth Adamson, Ilia Maisuradze, Don Caskie, and John Maglton accompanies the team in France.
