Georgia - U19 Euro champions

06-Nov-2011

The young “Lelos” have triumphed in FIRA-AER U19 European Championship for second year in a row, and brought the trophy back to Tbilisi
In this year’s final, not unlike the previous one, Georgians clashed with Russia, defeating them 20:12. However, both finalists were already guaranteed a place in IRB’s 2012 Junior World Rugby Trophy, to be held in USA.

The match proved to be tense. Russians led after the first half, thanks to two successful penalties. But after the break, as Georgia entirely changed the front row of the scrum, they managed to stage a successful comeback. Raphava and Khutsishvili provided match-winning tries.

Georgia also trailed in the semi-final to our old rival Romania - the score at the interval being 3:8. Nonetheless, thanks to an attacking ball-in-hand rugby favored by Georgians, Gogolashvili, Mamrikishvili, and Sharikadze scored three tries, ensuring the 16 point lead and the final result 24:8.

In the previous game, young Georgians were dominant against the outsiders of the tournament - Switzerland, who they beat in try spree - scoring eight tries in total and keeping a clean sheet with that - 50:0.
