Batumi Beach Rugby Tournament Goes International

On August 11-12 Batumi hosted an already traditional beach rugby tournament.

After the pilot edition in 2007, Batumi beach rugby tournaments are organized on an annual basis with participation of professional and amateur men’s and women’s teams.

For the first time this year, the tournament was visited by French team Auxerre. Georgian national team captain Irakli Abuseridze plays in this club and of course he joined his French teammates in Batumi.

This year’s Batumi beach rugby tournament was played by 10 professional, 9 amateur and 4 veteran men’s teams.

Irakli Chikava, co-founder of Georgian Beach Rugby Union:
“This year we received a remarkably high number of applications for participation in Batumi Beach Rugby Tournament from amateur teams, and we tried to tailor the format so as to provide all the participants with appropriate playing exposure and recovery time.

Interest toward participation in Batumi Beach Rugby Tournament grows from year to year, which means that popularity of rugby increases.

The final of Batumi Beach Rugby Tournament was very dramatic and spectacular: after three years of unsuccessful attempts, the host team - “Batumi” – finally managed to defeat Kutaisi-based “Aia” and became the winner.

Among the amateurs, the team of construction company “Facade” won the tournament by defeating “ProCreditBank” team. The veterans just enjoyed their share of the tournament.

Batumi Beach Rugby Tournament was organized with generous support of Ajara Department of Sports and Youth Affairs and Batumi City Hall.”
