IRB Tbilisi Cup 2013. Players visited Juvenile Penitentiary Facility

Rugby players and coaches from teams competing in the Tbilisi Cup visited Avchala Juvenile Penitentiary Facility this afternoon to meet and interact with the inmates as part of a re-socialisation programme organised by the Georgian Ministry of Sport.

Players from Georgia, Uruguay and South Africa President’s XV took part in a game of touch rugby with the inmates and answered questions about being a professional rugby players. The inmates showed off their arts and craft projects and gave the players a tour of the facility.

The department of youth affairs for the Ministry of Sport for Georgia implemented this programme at the start of 2013 that oversees the support of re-socialisation of the youths by means of sports and non formal education. These activities include Rugby, Football, Wood carving, Computer science and Music. The project will run throughout this year.

Many of the juveniles play rugby regularly and compete against Georgian club age grade teams on a monthly basis. Giorgi Kacharava, a Georgian A international, is coaching the juveniles. He is often supported by his younger brother – Georgian International David Kacharava.

This afternoon’s event was a huge highlight for these juveniles as they realise the importance of hosting professional players that represent their country on the world stage.

Eddie Myners, a coach for the South Africa President’s XV side, works in a similarly facility back in South Africa. He said: “You cannot underestimate how much of a powerful tool sport is, especially rugby. It gives these young individuals a focus for their attention and days like today are massive in keeping the players engaged in rugby.”
