Great victory to celebrate St. George Day

The Lelos celebrated the most significant victory in the history of Georgian Rugby on Saint George’s day, November 23. It was the first time when Georgian National Team defeated worlds one of the top 10 sides – Manu Samoa.

The Saturday’s test can be referred as the most dramatic and epic match Lelos had ever had.  With this victory a new milestone started for Georgian Rugby and it proved that the Lelos are the equal opposition for tier 1 sides. But what is the most important above all is that Georgian National Team got the confidence and self believe that victory over tier 1 side is possible.

On behalf of the Georgian Rugby Community we would love to express our gratitude and highest respect to Samoa National Team! They made a tremendous opposition and showed some unforgettable rugby.  We would also like to thank them for the respect they expressed towards our team and Georgian supporters gathered at the stands. It does not happen that often, when Samoa performs their ritual of “Siva Tau” after the match.

Milton Haig, Georgian National Team Head Couch

“We won the most important game. This was the first time Georgia defeated one of the top 10 sides in the world. This victory is very important for everybody, for players, couches, for the union and for the Supporters. Now we can say that all our efforts were paid off. We should be playing more against teams of such level as Samoa is and we are ready for that. We have certainly gained something from the June fixture against Argentina and that “something” was what has helped us to win today “

Mamuka Gorgodze, Captain of the Lelos

“The support from home crowed is always important for any sport, but it is the most important for us, the rugby players. It works especially for us and thus I want to give special thanks and express my gratitude to all those people who were cheering for us at the stands – we gained this victory together”.

George Nijaradze, Georgia Rugby Union President

„We probably cannot imagine how much the people’s support strengthens our boys. Thank god for this victory that we gained at Georgia’s patron, Saint George Day (Nov. 23). Already the fact that Georgia had a privilege of hosting such a strong side as Samoa is, speaks about itself. I understand that the fans demand wining in every game we play, but that does not happen like that. Today we won over the 8th team in the world ranking, but tomorrow we may lose to tier 2 nation. This is a normal process, and we should be developing this way – step by step. It is impossible to become one of top 10 sides in five minutes time. A miracle has happened today, the Lelos made a sensation. This victory gained us a huge respect from of World Rugby Family. Now we must do job worth hundred times more in order to remain this respect.”

The President and the Prime-minister of Georgia Congratulated the Lelso:

Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia

I am sure that you will bring many victories that will make us all happy and proud.
