2014 Match two - Portugal 9 - 34 Georgia

10-Feb-2014

On 8th of February, The Lelos won against Portugal National Rugby Team by marking their largest margin in score – 9:34 for the first time in sides’ previous encounters. Being very close to it at the end of the match, The Lelos failed to gain a bonus point win.

Thus, Georgian side players managed to score three tries against the host side – Tedore Zibzibadze scored the first try at the edge of the first half, whilst Merab Kvirikashvili and David Kacharava gained two tries to Georgia in the second half of the fixture. Besides of the try, Georgia’s top point scorer – Merab Kvirikashvili marked his 515th cap point by scoring four penalties and two conversion kicks during the game.

That probably was the best birthday present Milton Haig, Georgian National Team head couch could get, who turned 50 the day before the match.

“We are certainly happy to come away for Lisbon with the win and although we took the 4 points, we all know that we could have played better.

At times when we played with speed and executed our skills well, we certainly looked like a team that could score tries at will, but we were too inconsistent and a drop ball or a final poor pass cost us a few opportunities."

"Portugal defended very well. They had good line speed and made their tackles and put a lot of pressure on us at the breakdown and in both these areas they forced us into mistakes. Apparently we have never beaten Portugal in Lisbon by such a score before so that's a positive to take from the game" – Said Milton Haig.
