Victorious start in pool A

Right after opening two matches it was Georgian and Tongan U20 sides turn to head top the pitch for pool A opening match.

Right after the kick off, Georgia could have opened the score, but wing Shalva Shashiashvili failed to avoid touch line while attempting to scrore a try. Junior Lelos did not turn down their momentum and some 4 minutes later, Skipper Saba Shubitidze marked his 20st birthday with a try giving first 5point of the evening to his team. Flay half Revaz Jinchvelashivili converted the try and score 7-0 was established in favor of Georgia.

Soon after that, the Tongan side got penalized for lack of game discipline, which perfectly was transformed into additional 3 points for Georgia by Revaz Jinchvelashvili. He also scored additional two penalties in the first half, therefore marking 16-0 score with 10 minutes to HT.

Closer to the first half expiration, referee appointed a scrum in the Tongan 5 meter line. It did not cause much problem for traditionally powerful Georgian pack to push the scrum in to the opposition try line, leaving number 8 Vakhtan Amiranashvili to score the second Georgian try.  Jinchvelashvili failed to convert it that one. Team went to the half time break 21-0 in favor of Georgia.

Second half – Tonga fought back, but was not enough for Georgia

Tonga accumulated all their strength and confidence at the debut of the second half, resulting penalty and soon after a try for their team marking 21-10 score.

But that seemed to be all point for Islanders for that evening as Georgian side responded with Vakhtang Amiranashvili’s second try of the match and after conversion by fly half Jinchvelashvili, Georgia was already leading 28-10. During rest of the match Georgian fly half extended its lead twice and final whistle found Georgia wining 34-10 in their opening match against Tonga.

Post match commentary

David Vartanyan, Georgian U20 Head Coach:

“I was not really expecting winning by this margin, but I was sure that chosen strategy and game tactic would have resulted a victory. Our goal was to remain discipline throughout the whole match. The opposition failed to settle their game and we used it for our benefit. We played some good defense and it reflected on final score.

“We had some fouls as well, which we will improve before the match against the USA. Team USA is totally different team, it is more organized and thus we will prepare for the match accordingly.

Lado Kilasonia, Georgian U20 coach:

“We witnessed two different halfs. At the first half we were well organized and thus did not make any mistake. We fully used our strength, which was scrumming and opposition could not stand any chances in it. At the second half we lacked some confidence in the beginning, which caused us consisting 10 points. Then the scrum advanced once again turning the game into our favor, thus giving our backline better chances to attack. For the credit of our backs I would like to underline their perfect defense.“

Saba Shubitidze, Georgian U20 Captain:

“I am very happy we have won the first match. As for the game itself, I could say that we were scrumming better and flawless defense gave birth to some good attacks. I have to credit the opposition team for their string defense as well, but we managed to breach it.

“Tongan team has quite powerful and mobile pack, but we still managed to handle them.

“For the credit of the team I would like to underline the whole side was united as one organism, as a captain I am very proud and would like to express my gratitude to boys. We had enormous motivation and frankly to say we were very much confident and believed that result would have been in our favor.”

George Nijaradze, President of the Georgian Rugby Union:

“I am really pleased – we defeated one of the tournament favorites 34-10. The first half was magnificent: our team outdid the opponent in all the components of the game – the defense was great, attacking play was excellent, all the lineouts were successful. The backs and halfbacks played well. In other words, the team showed some high class performance.

“It should be said that the team relaxed a bit in the second half. For some time we had to play defense and this cost us a try, but our players quickly pulled themselves together and regained the advantage. Tonga’s answer to this was foul play. Generally speaking, Tongans played rough during the whole game; they even had two players sent off for biting. In the second half, as soon as they understood that the Georgians had the upper hand, they tried all sorts of tricks to provoke our players – fortunately, to no avail.

“In the end of the game – probably because the fatigue was already showing – our team failed to score the amount of points commensurate to the advantage we had. But the spectators at the match venue clearly saw during the whole match which team was better.

“As regards our next opponent – US Under 20 team looks like a well-disciplined and strong team. It is important now for our players to forget their victory against Tonga, recover as best they can, consider the mistakes they made and fully concentrate on playing against the USA.”
