U19 Lelos to play two fixtures against England Counties U20’s

19-May-2014

Georgian U19 side today departed to England for a return visit to face England Counties U20 team on 21st and 24th of May. Teams will play a development match on 21st, which will take place at Shelford RFC ground in Cambridge. Three days later, Counties U20’s will host an international fixture against their Georgian peers at Cambridge RUFC on May 24th.

Building international experience and further development

Georgian Rugby Union and England Counties cooperation began last year, when England Counties U20’s toured Georgia in May 2013. English side played two matches against hosting Georgia U19’s and managed to defeat home side in both physical and interesting fixtures. England Counties head coach, Bob Hood said after the first match: “Georgia proved that they are a serious rugby playing nation and produced a very physical and organised performance. We are very pleased with the way Counties team played and responded to the challenge.”

Georgian and English cooperation continues – Right after Georgian U19’s English tour, England Counties first XV will travel to Georgia to play two international fixtures against Emerging Georgia (former Georgia A). The fixtures will take place on 4th and 8th of June, at Rustavi Rugby Stadium, venue where The Lelos hosted USA Eagles during 2013 Autumn Internationals.

“Georgian Rugby Union and England Counties Rugby's friendship and mutual cooperation started last year, when English U20’s traveled to Georgia to face our U19’s team. Georgian Rugby fans witnessed two, close and uncompromised fixtures back then. Georgian Rugby and England Counties have come to decision to continue with their friendship.

"Having opportunity to play international tests against England Counties’ teams is very important for Georgian age grade and Emerging teams, asour players are gaining international experience, which will be extremely beneficial for them during their future test rugby and international tournaments.” - said Lasha Khurtsidze, Georgian Rugby Union Head of High Performance.
