Caucasians to qualify for New European Club Tournaments

European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), which came into being in April 2014, is the new organiser of European club rugby tournaments. EPCR's tournaments are the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Two clubs are still to qualify for the Challenge Cup from the qualifying tournament. Rugby Europe 1 will go into Challenge Cup Pool 1 along with Cardiff Blues, London Irish and Grenoble Rugby.

In order to qualify, Tbilisi Caucasians will compete against Femi-CZ Rugby Rovigo in Qualification Play-offs over two legs on 20 (away) and 27 (home) September with the two successful clubs securing spots in Pool 1 and Pool 3 respectively of the Challenge Cup.

The winners of the play-off between Rovigo and Tbilisi Caucasians will take the 19th spot in the new tournament and qualify for Pool 1 where they will join the 2010 Challenge Cup champions, Cardiff Blues, as well as London Irish and Grenoble.

The Head Coach, Levan Maisashvili said that only the best players of Georgian Premiership will be selected, as the opposition team is strong, powerful and experienced side, who were last season finalists of Italian premiership.

George Georgian RugbyNijaradze, president of Georgian Rugby Union said:“We are very happy to participate in qualification play offs for the Challenge Cup. It is the first time that Georgian Club Selection team would participate in International Club tournament, thus this highly motivates club players of Georgian premiership to be selected for the team.

“We named our team Tbilisi Caucasians and adopted falcon as logo, in order to represent and promote the region of Caucasus, where our country, Georgia is situated”.
