Georgia vs Spain, training squad updates

18-Feb-2015

In almost two weeks’ time Georgian National Team will play their Rugby Europe Championship 2015 round 3 fixture against Spain in Madrid on February 28. So far, The Lelos have two from two, but in spite of wining against Portugal last week, our team currently seats the second in tournament table with just one point less than Romania, which gained the bonus point victory against Spain.

Training Squad updates

Ahead to the fixture, the team will assemble in Barcelona on Monday for five days camp. Georgian coaching staff called for two additional players to the training squad - Simon Maisuradze  and Anton Peikrishvili who will join instead of recently injured Shalva Mamukashvili and David Kubriashvili respectively. The current squad will also feature Scrum Halve Vazha Khutsishvili .

“We have selected him as could not do it before due to the minor injury he had at preseason. Vazha played well against Japan during November Internationals and it is his chance to show what he is capable of and by the time we finish the third game, we will have all three scrum halves tested and based on that will decide which two of them will play in remaining two matches.” Said Milton Haig

Away against tough opponent

“We play away match.” Haig further continues: “It has always been a tough game against Spain. We’ve been there twice in my coaching career. Lost for the first time and won certainly only in the second halve when played last time. So playing against Spain in Madrid is always difficult, but the reality is we just have to be better. This is part of our improvement - when playing opposition like this, we just have to make sure to execute our skills. And if we do so, then the result will just takes care of itself.

“Spanish team traditionally has good backs. Although our back play has improved recently, we still need to improve more in execution, in those last passes… We are excited of having guys who understand the system really well and have some big, powerful boys too.

“The game against Germany was perfect example where we counter attacked quite well. We did it against Portugal as well, but we could not quite finish it. The coaches are looking forward to continue that way, but what we would be looking for in next game is finish a lot better, in terms of scoring those tries.”

Injury Update

With Shalva Mamukashvili’s recent knee injury received during the last game, the number of unavailable players has increased, but according to Milton Haig, the injured players who might be back for the rest of the tournament are Vasil Kakovin, David Kubriashvili and Mamuka Gorgodze. As for Jaba Bregvadze, Vito Kolelishvili, Tedore Zibzibadze, David Khinchagashvili and Vakhtang Maisuradze they are not likely to recover during this period.
“Shalva had a meniscus surgery yesterday. We will look at the recovery process and hope he’ll be able to start running in two months period” said Haig.
