Trophy Tours Georgia | Episode 2



World Rugby Undr 20 Championship trophy continues its tour across Georgia. After Shukhuti, the trophy visited Mestia and Ushguli in Upper Svaneti on April 26-27. The trophy was brought to Svaneti by veteran Lelos Lexo Gugava and Nono Andguladze.


Svaneti is a remote region, their journey started at dawn and on the road the trophy and its escort had to rest in several interesting spots. The first stop was in Jvari Village near Enguri Hydroelectric Power Station with its record-setting 271.5 m. Dam.



In several hours, the World Rugby Under 20 Championship trophy reached Mestia, elevated above sea level by 1500 meters, the town famous for stunning views and medieval towers, which are recognized as UNESCO World heritage sites. The local teenagers were waiting for its arrival in the schoolyard. The meeting lasted for over two hours – Lexo Gugava spoke with the teenagers about the core rugby values and about the World Rugby Under 20 Championship. The visitors gave children some rugby balls and played rugby with them. At the end of the day, the trophy was brought to Svaneti Museum, which is distinguished for its unique exposition and location.



On the next day, the traveling party went from Mestia to Ushguli - the highest inhabited place in Europe. As the village, which is also recognizes as UNESCO World heritage site, seats at 2200 meters above the sea level, this is the highest altitude the World Rugby U20 Championship Trophy has ever been to.


Dadiani Palace, Zugdidi

After Ushguli, the trophy visited Zugdidi, where the Governor of Samegrelo and Upper Svaneti hosted it. The Governor and other local dignitaries expressed their willingness to generously support development of rugby in the region.


The trophy was brought to Dadiani Palace, which stores the Mother of God holy vesture. In the courtyard of the palace boys and girls from local rugby clubs were waiting to witness trophy and don’t miss the chance to take photo with it.
