Americas Tour | Georgia’s Squad against Canada

08-Jun-2017

The Lelos arrived in Canada a week ago and started preparations for the first test of Americas tour against Canada. With 48 hours ahead of the match, Milton Haig named the Lelos match day 23.

The game to take place at Rugby Park on June 10, kicks off at 15:00 local time. It will be well past midnight in Tbilisi: the match will kick off at 1 in the morning our time. Rugby Canada does not broadcast the match over TV, but there will be a 4-camera live stream which will be transmitted via the social media platforms of @RugbyCanda and Georgian Public Broadcaster Channel 1 (with Georgian commentary).

Haig decided to give Levan Chilachava, Vito Kolelishvili and Shalva Mamukashvili some rest time. Their clubs (Toulon and Clermont) played the French Top 14 final and they had to join Georgia’s training camp later than planned.

Georgian match squad have 705 caps in total. Of these 393 belong to backs and 312 – to forwards, and only one player has less than 20 caps; on the other hand, four of the replacements have hardly played the aggregate of 10 internationals between themselves.

The second Georgian Centenarian

David Kacharava, who is in the Lelo’s start-up squad, will win his 100th test cap in Calgary. The team will be captained by his counterpart in midfield - Merab Sharikadze. Another sportsman to watch out for in Georgia’s starting XV is Merab Kvirikashvili, The Lelos’ most capped player and top scorer. Wings are reinforced by experienced Alexandre Todua and newbie Soso Matiashvili (1 cap). Matiashvili played his first international on March 4, 2017 at Rugby Europe Championship match against Spain, and marked his debut with a try.

The halfback line comprises seasoned and experienced Vasil Lobjanidze and Lasha Khmaladze. The front row includes Mikheil Nariashvili, Jaba Bregvadze and Anton Peikrishvili. The latter last played for Georgia against Tonga during the last year’s Pacific tour.

In the second row we will see the well-knit duo of Giorgi Nemsadze and Kote Mikautadze, and the third row showcases Lasha Lomidze, Giorgi Tkhilaishvili and Beka Bitsadze.

The ranks of substitutes include a young hooker Badri Alkhazashvili, who started playing for Georgia last year, during November internationals. Prop Soso Bekoshvili, also a substitute, first put on the Lelos’ jersey at this year’s Rugby Europe Championship (5 caps). Another substitute prop Karlen Asieshvili is a much more experienced player. The second-rowers to sit on the bench are Nodar Cheishvili and veteran Giorgi Chkhaidze, who played his previous international against Fiji during the June test 2016.

Substitute third-rower Otar Giorgadze has played for Georgia 4 times so far; substitute backs are experienced Lasha Malaguradze and Giorgi Begadze.
