The Lelos squad for Summer series match v USA

16-Jun-2017

The Lelos’ Head Coach Milton Haig named the squad for the second match of summer international series 2017 against USA Eagles.

There are three changes from the first match squad; two of these have been caused by injuries - on June 11, in strong wind and rain, the Lelos defeated Canada in Calgary 13:0. Prop Antopn Peikrishvili and third-row forward Giogi Tkhilaishvili got injured during the first half.

Levan Chilachava and Vito Kolelishvili will replace them against USA. Both joined the team with a slight delay, because their clubs played the French Top 14 Final, and national team coaches allowed them more time for recovery and adaptation.

Haig’s third change deals with the backs: Giorgi Koshadze is going to start as wing instead of Ioseb Matiashvili.

There are three new names among the substitutes too: Jaba Breagvadze’s substitute Badri Alkhazashvili will be replaced by Shalva Mamukashvili, young prop Tornike Mataradze and third-rower Giorgi Tsutskiridze will sit on the bench to join the game later.

Just as in at the first game, the ranks of substitutes include 6 forwards, one scrum-half and one back.

“After last week’s excellent win against Canada, we have again named a very strong 23-men squad. Lots of experience in nearly all positions and Giorgi Koshadze gets another chance to impress coaches as does Vito Kolelishvili and Levan Chilichava, who both have not played for the National Team since the November series in 2016" Said Milton Haig.

Mikautadze’s 50th

This match is a milestone for the Lelos’ and Montpellier’s second-rower Kote Mikautadze, who will win his 50th international cap against USA. Kote made his first international appearance in 2010 in Bucharest, at Scotland A vs Georgia, and starting with 2013 he is indispensable part of Georgia’s national squad. Kote’s record includes 49 caps and 2 tries.

Haig thinks the result of USA vs Georgia is highly important:

“This weekend’s match will be very important in terms of the overall success of the Summer Tour. It’s absolutely critical we play to our potential against USA and impose, not only our game, but also ourselves.

“USA are a fast and physical team and like to use the ball, but so do we. We understand the opposition strengths and weaknesses and it’s up to us to make sure we play our game and 'control what we can control” added Haig.
