Rugby Europe | Extended squad vs Belgium and Germany

24-Jan-2018

\

As the new international season is just less then month away, The Lelos’ coaching staff selected the extended squad for the first two matches of Rugby Europe Championship 2018. The Lelos will play their first match of the year against Belgium in Kutaisi, at AIA Arena (The Venue that hosted World Rugby U20 Championship 2017) on February 10.

In the 28-year history of its existence, the national team of Georgia will play in Kutaisi for the third time, former two matches being Georgia vs Zimbabwe on September 12 1989 (Georgia’s first ever international test - won 16:3), and Georgia vs Czech Republic on June 12 2005 (match ended 75:10, 11 tries scored by Georgia and first place gained in the European Nations Cup rankings due to the best points difference).

This is going to be The Lelos first match at the new AIA Arena. The match will kick off on 14:00. In a week from that, on February 17, Georgia will play against Germany in Offenbach on 17:30.

Two Uncapped players in the extended squad

On the 36-man extended squad there are two players who have not yet played for The Lelos yet. Both potential debutants are third row forwards – Mikheil Gachechiladze (Enissey-STM) and Guram Shengelia (captain of R.C. Jikebi, standing Champion of Georgia). In total, out of 36 players on the list, 24 are based in foreign clubs and 12 come from Didi 10 (Big Ten, Georgian top tier premiership) clubs.

The Lelos’ extended squad contains experienced international players: Mikheil NAriashvili, Kakha Asieshvili, Zurab Zhvania, Anton Peikrishvili, Levan Chilachava, Shalva Mamukashvili, Kote Mikautadze, Giorgi Nemsadze, Vito Kolelishvili, Giorgi Thkhilaishvili, Lasha Lomidze, Vasil Lobzhanidze, Giorgi Begadze, Lasha Khmaladze, Lasha Malaguradze, Merab Sharikadze, David Kacharava, Alexandre Todua, Beka Tsiklauri and Merab Kvirikashvili.

As well as those with less experience: Tornike Mataradze, Lasha Tabidze, Badri Alkhazashvili, Giorgi Chkoidze, Nodar Cheishvili, Otar Giorgadze, Giorgi Tsutskiridze, Gela Aprasidze, Revaz Jinchvelashvili, Giorgi Kveseladze, Giorgi Koshadze, Anzor Sichinava, Ioseb Matiashvili and Giorgi Pruidze. Among the newbies, the most capped player is Giorgi Pruidze (13 caps), though he last wore the national team jersey a year ago – and it was also at matches against Belgium and Germany. Chkoidze has 2 caps (which he also collected last year against Belgium and Germany), and Sichinava got his one cap in November 2016 in the match against Japan.

Preparation for RWC 2019 Kicks Off

Milton Haig says that the 2018 matches will be very important as the team is looking forward to prepare for RWC 2019:

" The new year is an exciting time for those involved with the National Team as it also marks the start of our World Cup preparation. The start of 2018 has always been the time where we have thought to introduce our planning and selections that will really start to impact in terms of our 2019 RWC strategies and goals.

“For those players who are selected to play for the National Team in the next 12 months, it means that we are looking at them very seriously and want to see if they have what it takes to represent us in Japan”

Haig also commented on the team selection for upcoming first two matches of Rugby Europe Championship 2018:

“This initial squad for the first 2 games only in the REC is a selection of proven performers, some younger players who we think have a future and some locally based players, who have trained very hard in the last 4 months and who have also played well for their clubs in the Didi 10.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in the National Team with only 18 months to go before we start our official 2019 Rugby World Cup preparation.

“Every opportunity will count, whether it’s on the training field, in a match or in a team meeting, everyone will need to put their best 'foot forward' if they want to be considered for 2019 RWC."
