Corrected: Scotland to tour Georgia!

Date changed: Match one to be held at Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi on August 31 instead of August 24, 2019

Scotland is going to be the first Tier 1 team to tour Georgia for full international test against The Lelos in Tbilisi!

This series will serve as warm up matches for both teams ahead of Rugby World Cup 2019; as teams consider it as part of their pre-Rugby World Cup preparation. The series will include two matches: on August 31, 2019 The Lelos will host the Scots at Dinamo Arena, and on September 6/7 Georgia will face the Scotland at Murrayfield.

Scotland expressed their willingness to tour Georgia back in 2016, when they hosted the Leos in Kilmarnock and they have every intention to keep their word.

Georgia Rugby Union President Gocha Svanidze on two Unions’ agreement and the importance of the upcoming match:

“As we are approaching the Rugby World Cup 2019, Georgia has already launched its preparation campaign, in the end of which The Lelos will play two warm-ups against Scotland and our preparation stage will be perfectly completed with it.

“I want to thank the Scottish Rugby for this opportunity, which they had offered us back in 2016 during our test in Kilmarnock. I hope both teams will benefit from these matches. For Georgia, this is going to be the first experience of hosting a Tier 1 team and this makes it even more meaningful for us. On the other hand, these matches will help the coaching staff with the selection process and give them another opportunity for building the strongest team they can ahead of Japan 2019.”

High Performance Director Lasha Khurtsidze is satisfied with the visit of a Tier-1 team:

As this is the first time Georgia hosting Tier 1 team, we are delighted by this  opportunity in the end of our preparation stage. Having two warm-ups against the top team like Scotland will be the biggest experience for The Lelos and I hope this will impact positively for both sides ahead of the Pool matches at Japan 2019.”

Milton Haig is happy with this opportunity:

“The scheduling of these 2 matches to help us prepare for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan is a historical moment for our Team and our Union.

History will be made as it will be the first time Scotland will have played here in Georgia and they will be the first ever Tier 1 Nation to play a match on Georgian home soil.

“This is testament to the relationship Georgia and Scotland have forged over the last few years and the National Team are extremely humbled and privileged to play such an outstanding International team in front of our families, friends and very supportive rugby fans.

“We have made it a goal to prepare even better for this coming Rugby World Cup than we did for 2015 and these games play a huge part in that preparation. To have 2 high quality International games against Scotland is only something we would have dreamed of in the past, for it to become reality is something of a dream come true and everyone involved with the National Team, players and staff are very excited about the opportunity given to us"

Scotland’s Head Coach Greg Townsend grades the test vs Lelos as crucially important for pre-RWC preparation:

“With 18 months to go until Rugby World Cup 2019, our planning for the tournament is well underway. These warm-up matches against quality international opposition will give us the chance to assess where we are as a squad, as well as give players the opportunity to put their hands up for selection for Japan.

“Georgia are currently placed 12th in the World Rugby Rankings and are a country on the rise. Playing against them will be a good test for us ahead of our Pool matches at the Rugby World Cup.”
