The second joint camp with England Rugby

The Lelos to train with one of the strongest teams in world rugby, England Rugby for the second time, since the last year. With the initiative of England Rugby head coach, Eddie Jones, Georgia visited England for the first time for joint camp in February 2018.

The Next Best Thing

The perspective of joint camp with one of the best tier one teams is very exciting for Georgia’s head coach, Milton Haig:

“I have always said - If you can’t play against a tier one team, to train against one is the next best thing!” said Haig.“When I spoke to Eddie pre new year, he was open for us training with them again. he said “Yea lets do it again!” so I was very pleased.

“Eddie Jones has got a very close relationship with Georgia and me. You just have to look back at history when he was with Japan - we played Japan 4 times in the 4 years between 2012 and 2015. Now he is the head coach of England and we have trained with them twice (laughs). So, we are very lucky. He has always been very supportive of Georgian rugby. He is a big fan of Georgian rugby. That’s important to have and it’s important to foster that relationship well”

30 selected for England Camp

The Lelos departed to England with the squad of 30 players, 16 of which are forwards and 14 are backs. Zurab Zhvania, who plays his rugby for premiership side Wasps, Shalva Sutiashvili of Angouleme and Otar Giorgadze of Brive (both French Pro D2) are new editions to the lelos forwards pack in an extended squad after the first two rounds of Rugby Europe Championship 2019. Also, the backs – Merab Sharikadze (team caotain), David Kacharava, Soso Matiashvili and Gela Aprasidze are back from injuries and are looking forward for England Camp.

“The scrummaging session last year was legendary apparently in England. Graham watched it. He had said much about it… That scrummaging session has become quite famous.” Says Haig and continues with the positive outcome Georgia is looking for to getting from the second edition of joint session with England Rugby:

“We’ve got two days of training. One day will be about just forwards and backs separated and doing their thing. And the second day it’ll be some more collective team stuff. They are quite keen to run some team stuff against us and do some more unit stuff. So in the long run as I’ve said, this is a massive for us to train against one of the best teams in the world. And it is giving our players an opportunity, to youngers and seniors another chance to benchmark themselves against tier one players.

“For us it’s about our backs getting against their backs. It’s about our lineout operating better against their very very good lineouts. We’ll get tons out of it and the objective is just actually comparing ourselves against a tier players and a very good tier one team. When we get the opportunity to do those sorts of things, then we can come back revise ourselves and say, “we aren’t too far away”. These experiences help us to grow and to get better and not only just the players but also the characters. So that’s what we will be looking forward to.”

Set for new experience

12 of selected players (7 forwards and 5 backs), have not participated in last years training: Vano Karkadze, the youngest member of the Lelos squad. The 18-years-old hooker won his first senior international cap against Romania on February 9th; Young props – Guram Gogichashvili of Racing 92 (Georgia U20 program graduate. Participated in World Rugby U20 Championships 2017 and 2018) and Beka Gigashvili of Grenoble, who won their first international caps in November 2018 against Samoa and Tonga; Locks – David Gigauri (debuted for Georgia against Romania on February 9th) and Shalva Sutiashvili; Back rowers – Beka Gorgadze and Beka Saghinadze (Both Georgia U20 graduates); fly half – Tedo Abzhandadze, who played for Georgia in World Rugby U20 Championships 2017, 2018 and along with Vano Karkadze is still eligible for the tournament in June 2019 in Argentina; Backs – Zurab Dzneladze (RC Locomotive Tbilisi, Geo), Mirian Modebadze (RC AIA Kutaisi, Geo), Soso Matiashvili (RC Lelo Saracens Tbilisi, Geo) and Giorgi Aptsiauri (RC Locomotive Tbilisi, Geo).
