Georgia squad for historic home test vs Scotland

30-Aug-2019

The Lelos’ coaching staff named the 23-man squad for the second TBC Rugby Series 2019, pre-RWC test match. After the win against Southern Kings on August 27, the Georgians are applying 10 changes to the squad composition ahead of the game against Scotland at Dinamo Arena.

First-ever Tier 1 side visiting

In the second match of TBC Rugby Series kicking off at 20:00 on August 31 the Lelos will host Scotland, the first Tier 1 team to visit Georgia.

In the previous years, we played against Scotland twice – at Rugby World Cup 2011, when we prevented the opponent from scoring a try and lost 6:15, and in November 2016 in Scotland, when the hosts defeated us 43:16, though we had scored two tries.

In the most recent of our previous encounters, Scotland had a firm advantage during the first half, while in the second half they only managed to score a single try. After that match, Scottish Rugby made a promise to visit Georgia before Rugby World Cup 2019. They made this promise good and came to Georgia, bringing their strongest squad and planning to use this game for the pre-RWC run-through.

During their pre-RWC camp, Scotlandalready played two warm-up matches against France, of which they lost the first one 3:32 and won the second one 17:14, in spite of 3:14 disadvantage early in the game.

The Lelos have played against Scotland ‘A’twice, and if the first of these games, played in Glasgow in 2008, resulted in overwhelming defeat - 3:69, in 2010 team Georgia won 22:21 in Bucharest.

Four changes in backs

After having defeated the Southern Kings within the last 12 minutes of the game, the Lelos’ coaching staff applied 10 changes to the starting 15.

Halfbacks duo has been fully refreshed: Vasil Lobzhanidze and Tedo Abzhandadze are going to start the game at scrumhalf and flyhalf. Gela Aprasidze and Lasha Khmaladze moved to the bench.

David Kacharava will replace the injured Merab Sharikadze, who had joined Georgia vs Southern Kings as a replacement. Kacharava will pair with Zurab Dzneladze and achieve a historic milestone of 115 caps, reaching Merab Kvirikashvili’s cap record.

Ioseb Matiashvili remains at fullback. Mirian Modebadze keeps his position at wing; his counterpart, in lieu of Giorgi Aptsiauri is Alexandre Todua, who had started the previous match on the bench.

Tamaz Mchedlidze starts the game on the bench.

Refreshed scrum pack

The Lelos’ forwards have been almost completely replaced after the match with Southern Kings.

The front row is totally new – Mikheil Nariashvili, Shalva Mamukashvili and Beka Gigashvili. They were not in the squad at the previous game. On the other hand, the front-rowers who had been on the bench last time – Giorgi Chkoidze, Karlen Asieshvili and Levan Chilachava, remain at backup.

Changes also affected the second row: the game will be started by the duo of Kote Mikautadze and Shalva Sutiashvili, while Giorgi Nemsadze and Lasha Lomidze moved to the bench.

There is one change in the back row. Considering Giorgi Tsutskiridze’s injury the coaches decide to move Beka Giorgadze to flanker and set Beka Gorgadze as no. 8. Beka Saghinadze keeps his place in the third row.

Experienced front-rower Mikheil Nariashvili will act as captain in this match against Scotland. 29-year-old prop is going to be the Lelos’ 31stcaptain; Georgia vs Scotland will be his 55thcap.
