31-men squad for Japan 2019

02-Sep-2019

The Lelos’ Head Coach Milton Haig named the 31 players who will represent Georgia at Rugby World Cup 2019.

This is the fifth consecutive Rugby World Cup for Georgia, which will be the fourth for two players selected in the squad – Georgia’s all time try scorer Mamuka Gorgodze, who retired from international rugby and returned as squad needed him for the tournament and Georgian centurion Davit Kacharava, who has 115 caps behind his back.

Japan 2019 would have been the 5th Rugby World Cup for Merab Kvirikashvili, who did not make it to the 31-man squad due to an injury.

This is will bethe third Rugby World Cup for Jaba Bregvadze, Lasha Malaguradze, Giorgi Nemsadze, Sandro Todua and Shalva Sutiashvili. A last-minute injury just before RWC 2015 prevented Lasha Khmaladze from getting into this list. Although Gorgodze said good-bye to the national team 3 years ago, but he considered injuries sustained by his former teammates during the pre-RWC camp and, to the delight of the Lelos’ fans, agreed to return to the team. His release from the club is 99% agreed. Mamuka is the only player who did not attend the pre-Rugby World Cup camp and is going to join the team after September 8.

13 from all 31 players will play at rugby’s largest global forum for the first time in their life and the youngest of them all is Georgian U20 program graduate hooker, Vano Karkadze who turned 19 just recently. There are 17 forwards 14 back in The Lelos squad for Japan. 9 from the squad play their rugby in Georgia’s top tier division – Didi 10 (big ten), the rest 22 are foreign-based players.
